Analogies Imply a Relationship

Social Life No Comments »

A young baby needs the stimulation of being spoken to in order to foster maximum growth and development. For the same reasons, you should talk to young plants, you’ll be amazed at the difference it will make to their growth.

The above illustrates the kind of relationship usually implied by the use of analogies in argument. A leads to B; C is similar to A in some way; therefore the same action (A) in the case of C will produce B.

The conclusion drawn by an analogy such as that above may turn out to be a correct on ( there is some evidence to suggest that talking to plants promotes growth!) but the analogy in no way ‘proves’ this. It is a poor analogy because the relationship between plants and children is not a strong one. There are probably more differences than similarities, so that we can not safely conclude that what is right for one will be right for the other. For that reason, we can not treat thea all the same way.
